Why Not… Part 2

Today, I thought I’d follow yesterday’s lead and beef up my “Y” count by playing some Yo La Tengo. I could have gone for a number of their tracks as they really are a fantastic band, who can be equal parts Sonic Youth and Stereolab depending on the song. Here’s the ethereal “Moby Octopad” from the 1997 masterpiece I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One

But that’s not all folks. As something of a segue from yesterday’s “Y” band, the Yellow Magic Orchestra, I thought I’d play the beautiful “Kaze wo Atsumete” by fellow Japanese group Happy End, which featured in the film Lost in Translation. Why? Because it was written by Haroumi Hosono, who after leaving Happy End co-founded the Yellow Magic Orchestra.

I’ll change letters tomorrow, promise…

Why Not…

The other day, whilst updating my list of what’s been played, I realised that I hadn’t yet played anything by a band that begins with the letter “Y”. So as today is the 25th day of the month, and “Y” is the 25th letter of the alphabet, it seems fair to break its duck.

I’m not exactly flush for choice under this letter but happily I can call upon the Yellow Magic Orchestra, Japan’s answer to Kraftwerk. Here’s their mad track “Key” from the album Technodelic, which is a personal favourite of mine…

I’ve a couple of their albums and they really do mix between the sublime and the bizarre. For example, the first track on Technodelic, “Pure Jam“, begins with the immortal words…

“This must be the ugliest piece of bread I have ever eaten”

I suspect it was a slice of Mighty White. It tasted like it was made with sand.

On that note I wish you good night.
